Farmington High School Students Negative Cell Phone Use...
When was the last time you saw a teenager without their cell phone? They may forget their lunch money or their homework, but they dont leave home without their phones. Farmington High School students are no different than teens at other schools. For many Farmington students their cell phone use can have a negative impact on their school work. Studies have shown that students may be paying more attention to their phones than they are to their class work. Often during class, a student will be texting a friend with some unimportant message instead of paying attention to the teacher. They may look like they are quietly listening to the instructor , but under the edge of the desk, the hem of a jacket, or a stack of papers their fingers mayâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Of course this is not allowed, so the student loses even more of their concentration as they worry about how to hide the phone while texting. The inappropriate phone use does not stop in the classroom. Cell phone use can cause accidents and affect students both physically and mentally. Students have tripped on objects, crashed into others, and walked into walls while hurrying to class because they are using their phone. According to PBS program This Emotional Life four out of five teens sleep with their cell phones at night. They seem to feel they must be on call 24 hours a day. Interrupted and lack of sleep can affect both concentration, memory and mood. Even the students homework suffers from constant interruptions. No matter how important the work is, the calls come first. Many people will argue that the cell phone is one of our greatest modern inventions. It can save lives in an emergency. Children are taught at an early age to call 911 if they need help. CNN iReport points out that many kids take medications or have allergies and a phone could be a safety issue. Parents and children are able to contac t each other at any time of the day and it makes both feel safer. It allows people to stay in close touch with their family and friends. Chopstics and Forks free essay sample
In the spring in my junior year in Culver, I brought my friend, Jonathan, to Korea. Jonathan and I have been to various countries. We were exposed to various cultures and traditions. We mostly compared the advantages we could have through having experienced both cultures of the U.S. and Korea. The most interesting conversation we had was held in a Chinese restaurant in my hometown. Jonathan and I roamed around in the Bundang, a suburb of Seoul, and decided to have Chinese food for lunch. While waiting for our food, I showed him the chopsticks. He had never tried using chopsticks before he went to that restaurant. Since chopsticks are not the instruments he could learn easily, he asked why he should bother himself to use them. I tried to convince him that chopsticks are the best utensils; however, I couldnt. For my whole life, I believed chopsticks are handier instruments than forks. We will write a custom essay sample on Chopstics and Forks or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The conversation with Jonathan convinced me that none of them is more superior to another. With chopsticks, one can pick up and drop and tear without any other utensils aid. But one cannot scoop hard boiled rice with chopsticks. On the other hand, with forks, one can scoop, slice, hold. But one cannot drop the food without other utensils aid. Chopsticks and forks have diverse strengths and weakness. Its hard to tell which one is better What I learned from chopsticks and forks is there is no culture that has supremacy over other cultures. It is wise to collect the merits from different cultures and combine them to create a better environment rather than choosing a single culture you prefer.

Why Napleon Was A Success Essay Essays - Napoleon, French Emperors
Why Napleon Was a Success Essay Napoleon Bonaparte, was born on August 15, 1769 in Ajaccio, Corsica. He had 7 brothers and sisters. His original nationality was Corsican-Italian. He also despised the French. He thought they were oppressors of his native land. His father was a lawyer, and was also anti-French. One reason Napoleon may have been such a conqueror was he was raised in a family of radicals. In 1784 to 1785 Napoleon attended the Ecole Militaire in Paris. That was the place where he received his military training. He studied to be an artillery man and an officer. He finished his training and joined the French army when he was 16 years old. Soon after that his father died, Napoleon was stationed in Paris in 1792. After the French monarchy was overthrown on August 10, 1792, Napoleon decided to make his move up in the ranks. After this, Napoleon started becoming a recognized officer. In 1792 Napoleon was prompted to the rank of captain. In 1793 he was chosen to direct the artillery against the siege in Toulon. He seized ground where he could get his guns in range of the British ships. Soon after that Toulon fell and Napoleon was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. When Napoleon was made commander of the French army in Italy. He defeated four Austrian generals in succession, and each army he fought got bigger and bigger. This forced Austria and its allies to make peace with France. During this campaign the French realized how smart Napoleon was. He developed a tactic that worked very efficiently. He would cut the enemy's army in to two parts, then throw all his force on one side before the other side could rejoin them. This method was extremely effective against the Sardinian troops, because he defeated them five times in 11 days. When Napoleon returned to Paris he receive a huge welcome. He then began thinking of pursuing political power and military power. He wanted to become the next Alexander the Great, so he asked the Directory if he could take a large army to Egypt. That way he could conquer an empire that included Egypt, India, and other middle and far east places. Napoleon came up with a neat idea to accomplish this. If he conquered Egypt, he could attack the English's route to India. He won the battle of the Pyramids in July 1798. But his fleet was destroyed at the Battle of the Nile in Aboukir Bay. So Napoleon decided to invade Syria. The English and Turkish troops in Syria had held up against Napoleon. Napoleon then retreated to Egypt. Then later in July 1799, he defeated 10,000 Turks at Aoukir. He returned to France shortly after. The above are just a few of many examples of why Napoleon was and Outstanding success.

Scarlet letter Essays
Dolls House/ Scarlet letter Essays Dolls House/ Scarlet letter Paper Dolls House/ Scarlet letter Paper Essay Topic: A Dolls House The Scarlet Letter Often, besides portraying the dynamic changing character straightforward, authors will interweave a certain object that symbolizes the protagonist throughout the course of the story. A couple good examples of this can be shown using Nathanial Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter and Henrik Ibsens A Dolls House. While both have different symbols, they both portray the women protagonists in the story, its meanings changing over time. For The Scarlet Letter, the protagonist Hester Prynnes symbol is the letter A sewn onto her dress while in A Dolls House, Nora Helmers symbol is the Christmas tree her family gets for the holidays. In the beginning of the book, each symbol means one thing, while at the end of the story it takes on a completely new meaning, almost the opposite. In The Scarlet Letter, Hester Prynnes symbolic letter A retains a benevolent meaning by the end of the story, while at the beginning that was far from, somewhat opposite, of what it was supposed to mean. Adulterer. Accused of committing adultery while waiting years for her husband to come home to her, a scarlet letter A is embroidered upon the chest of Hester. In the beginning of the novel, in fact, the letter is depicted as an obnoxious token of shame that stands out on her bosom while she is standing upon the scaffold for the whole world to see her. And when she is holding her baby in front of her, evidence of her so called crime, it is said that one token of her shame would but poorly serve to hide another. From the beginning of the novel, described as the wearer of the scarlet letter instead of her name Hester, the letter came to define her and made her lose all the other aspects of herself. Throughout the course of the story, events constantly happen to remind her of the scarlet letter she shamefully seems to bear. In one instant at Governor Bellinghams house when her daughter is looking at some armor, Hester notices that it is like a convex mirror and the scarlet letter was represented in exaggerated and gigantic proportions, so as to be greatly the most prominent feature or her appearance. In another part of the story, Hesters daughter Pearl starts gathering handfuls of wild flowers, and flinging them, one by one, at her mothers bosom; dancing up and down, like a little elf, whenever she hit the scarlet letter. Yet again, to Hester it is another moment constantly reminding her of what she did. The change all starts in Chapter thirteen, called Another View of Hester, the title alone foreshadowing a change in meaning of the symbol. The symbol not only becomes forgotten and disregarded; it becomes almost sacred and symbolizes someone of a higher status. Described with a positive connotation, glittering in its fantastic embroidery, the letter is now a familiar object to the townspeople. Hester became a shoulder to cry on; one to aid those in need, feed the poor, and cure the sick. Able. In A Dolls House, what Nora goes through is almost opposite of what happens to Hester. While Hester slowly increases her status in society, Nora Helmer deteriorates along with the Christmas tree throughout the course of the short play. This is clearly seen by examining minute descriptions, stage directions and clear physical depictions of both Nora and the Christmas tree. The tree is somewhat mentioned in every scene, nonchalantly in the background of where the action is taking place. From the beginning of the play, when the porter is helping her bring the tree in, to throughout the play when she is slowly decorating the tree little by little, the tree is noticed one way or another. There is more than one parallel between Nora and the tree, symbolizing her not only psychologically, but physically as well. Psychologically, as stated earlier, Nora gradually becomes a disheveled mess, once anxiety fills her at the thought of her secret being revealed by Krogstad, which in turn would make Torvald extremely mad at her. Supporting this, she is described as being alone in the room, walking about uneasily. Similarly, this is at the point in the story, the beginning of Act II, when the Christmas tree is also described as a sorry mess. In a corner, it is stripped of its ornaments with burnt-down candle-ends on its disheveled branches. Moving along to the similar physical representation of Nora and the tree, the discussion of decorations are essential. First off, Nora decorates the tree just as Torvald seems to decorate and dress her for the party. Similarly, she disallows the children from seeing the tree before it looks pretty with all of its ornaments, just like she will not let anyone see her in her new dress until the night of the party. Apart from just the fact that Nora and the tree are both merely decorated, the actual ornaments can be looked at in a way to symbolize her lies she tells. As the tree loses its di cor and beauty, that is how much closer the truth is getting to being revealed. On that tangent, in the beginning of the play in Act I, Torvald tells Nora, Keep your little Christmas secrets to yourself, my darling. They will all be revealed to-night when the Christmas tree is lit, no doubt. This is what could be the beginning of where the parallelism between Nora and the tree actually starts. Interestingly, although this is before the part where the reader actually knows about Noras lies and what Krogstad has on her, once looked back upon this part can be seen as a defining beginning to the symbolism. Although the symbols portrayed the main character in each novel, their meanings changed in different ways, one positively and the other negatively. In The Scarlet Letter, the meaning symbolic letter A changed from adulterer to able, upbringing Hesters position in society from one of shame to one people could look up to. On the other hand, in A Dolls House, the physical state of the Christmas tree slowly worsens over the course of the play, representing the decline of Noras psychological state. While one woman had more luck than the other in the fact that her symbol changed for the better, the style of writing in terms of symbolism that both Hawthorne and Ibsen had were very similar.

The Qatari Police I have the outline - Essay Example This guard serves as a cache for the regular forces while reinforcing the metropolitan police as required. The rate of crime in Qatar is normally low due to the large presence of police throughout the country. Although occurrences of violence tend to be rare, they have happened more frequently as a result of Dohaââ¬â¢s population, as well as economic pressures on emigrant workers. There are reports of verbal and physical harassments of unaccompanied emigrant women by local and third country national young men. On the other hand, reports of petty theft tend to be infrequent though they have been growing; they include ATM and credit card theft, pick pocketing and purse snatching (Peter & Dilip 10). The main police divisions are immigration, criminal investigation, trials and courts-martial, traffic, prisons, emergency police, civil defense, nationality and passports. The criminal investigation division tends to be accountable for ordinary criminal cases, while Kuwait State Security tends to investigate security-related offenses. Both have concerns with investigations of terrorism, as well as those suspected of collaborating with Iraq. The U.S. Department of State evaluates the present crime rate in Qatar as being low. However, according to reports by Qatarââ¬â¢s Ministry of Interior, there is a substantial increase in crime levels in Qatar since 2005 and there are a projection of continued rise in years to come. Flashbulb memory Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Flashbulb memory - Essay Example Kennedy was assassinated. Should this individual remember that they were flying a kite on the beach that day, this is an example of flashbulb memory. Flashbulb memory is generally a unique phenomenon for each person experiencing it, with some individuals reporting more negative emotions with an event while others reflect positively on a particular moment in time. As such, there does not appear to be a unanimous belief in the psychological community that flashbulb memories will hold the same value or importance for each individual person. However, the fact that the human mind maintains the ability to instantly recall events from history with unbelievable accuracy tends to illustrate the complexity of human cognitive capabilities. Ask any group of individuals to describe the exact details of a specific day in the calendar year, perhaps a day when the group was in elementary school. Likely, they will not be able to provide details of the event with any kind of clarity. However, utilizing the aforementioned John Kennedy reference, cooking guru Julia Child can easily recall that she and her husband were eating soup at the time of the assassination (Greenberg, 2005). Another disaster occurred in England in which nearly 100 soccer fans were crushed to death during a stadium catastrophe. One month after the incident, all surveyed respondents were able to clearly remember the events of their lives at the moment they heard the news of the stadium disaster (Luminet, Curci, Marsh, Wessel, et al, 2004). All of the aforementioned situations would tend to illustrate that flashbulb memories are created by some form of rememberable stimuli, which engrains the daily events of an individual and links them directly with the tr aumatic or inspirational event. Though there is no clear evidence as to why this phenomenon occurs, however it has been suggested by several researchers that individuals are capable of
